Quick answer
A web research terminal is a browser workspace that keeps a watchlist, a price chart, headlines, and a details panel on one screen, and keeps them on the same symbol. It is not a remote desktop of a professional terminal, and it is not a charting site whose only job is drawing tools. On our public site the screen is the research terminal. As of 2026-10-02 the hosted copy runs in Desk mode: Yahoo chart history when that host answers, with Stooq as a fallback, plus the site news tape. OpenBB is the private lab path. When that lab is offline, the page says Desk and leaves missing fields empty.
Key takeaways
- The useful unit is a linked board, not a marketing page about a board.
- Selecting a symbol should move the chart, the news filter, and the details together.
- Public quotes are enough to see last price, session change, and a daily chart. They are not a full fundamental dataset.
- An empty PE cell means the quote source did not send trailing PE. It is not a zero multiple.
- Read the morning routine in how to run a morning pass after this page.
Who this is for
- Readers who want to know what a browser research workspace actually contains before they open one.
- Editors who need to tell a product screen from a daily market note or a charting demo.
Who should skip
- Anyone shopping for Level 2 quotes, an order book, or a broker connection. This terminal does not trade.
- Readers who want a dated quote table. That is a separate snapshot, and those URLs are not the ranking pages for this topic.
What belongs on the screen
The Morning layout is the default. A narrow rail lists Morning, Watchlists, Screener, and Brief. Screener is still a placeholder: there is no filter engine behind it. Brief is a door to the short daily card, not the card itself. The center holds a watchlist table, a chart, and a news list. A drawer on the right repeats the focused symbol: last, change, volume, PE, and source.
The table columns are symbol, last, change percent, volume, trailing PE, and source. Column headers sort. A row click sets focus. The chart offers 1M, 3M, and 1Y, which are about 22, 66, and 252 daily bars when history is long enough. A crosshair reads the date and close under the pointer. News can be limited to the focused symbol or kept on the whole universe. If the focus filter has no headlines, the list falls back to the broader tape so the panel is not a blank box with no explanation.
The command field accepts a comma-separated list such as SPY,QQQ,NVDA,AAPL. The same job is available from the command palette (Ctrl+K or the command button): load a list, focus one name already on the board, or switch layout. The layout choice, sort, chart range, and news filter are stored in the browser. A refresh keeps that layout. It does not sync a layout to another person. Sharing a view is still a URL with symbols and focus, not a saved desktop.
What "linked" means
Linkage is the difference between a workspace and four unrelated widgets. On this terminal, focus is one symbol. The chart history request, the news filter, and the details drawer all read that symbol. Changing the universe replaces the table. Changing focus inside the universe does not throw away the other names.
A charting site can be excellent at intervals, drawings, and multi-chart sync, and still weak as a research desk, because the watchlist and the headlines are side panels rather than the record of a decision. A remote professional terminal can be excellent because decades of functions and licensed data sit behind it. The web page in that case is often a stream of the desktop, not a layout designed for a browser. Our screen is the third thing: a fixed Morning board in the browser, with public data labeled as public data.
Where the numbers come from
Hosted mode probes a private OpenBB lab and, if that probe fails, marks the session Desk. Desk quotes prefer the Yahoo chart endpoint and can fall back to Stooq for history. Each quote row keeps a provider name and an as-of timestamp. The news rows are items already stored on the site tape, with that tape's sentiment label. This page does not rescore headlines and does not invent a reason a price moved.
As of 2026-10-02, the Yahoo chart metadata we receive for this board does not include trailing PE. The PE column stays blank and the details drawer says there is no trailing PE. That behavior is described in how a cited number is allowed on the page. When public last prices are enough, and when they are not, is the subject of public data versus licensed terminal data.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | What is actually true |
|---|---|
| Treating the screen as a data license | The footnote names Yahoo, Stooq, or the lab. The license is whatever that source grants. |
| Reading a blank PE as zero or as "cheap" | Blank means the field was absent. |
| Expecting the Screener item to filter the market | The item is a placeholder. The working views are Morning and Watchlists. |
| Using a one-day quote URL as the explainer | A dated snapshot repeats. This page is the stable description of the workspace. |
How to open the same board
Open the research terminal. The default universe is SPY, QQQ, NVDA, and AAPL, with SPY focused. That is the board the later articles use. The only call to action on this page is that screen. The short daily card lives at the market brief and does not replace this explanation.
FAQ
Is this a Bloomberg terminal in the browser?
No. It is a research workspace with public quotes and a news tape. It does not include Bloomberg data, and it is not a remote session of a professional terminal.
Why does the page say Desk?
Desk means the private OpenBB lab did not answer, so quotes came from the public path. The label is the status, not a brand of data vendor.
Can I save a layout for someone else?
The browser remembers your layout on that device. Another person gets your board only if you send a URL with the symbol list and focus.
Does the chart predict the next session?
No. The 1M, 3M, and 1Y ranges are history. The crosshair reads a past close.
