Quick answer
A cited market number on this desk is a figure copied from a named provider, with an as-of time, on a named symbol. If the provider does not send the field, the cell stays empty. Desk fallback means the private OpenBB lab did not answer, so the research terminal used the public quote path and said so. Blank trailing PE is the current example: the chart payload has last price and no PE, so PE is not zero and not estimated. The layout around those cells is described in how the terminal works.
Key takeaways
- Every sentence that contains a price needs a symbol, a provider, and a time.
- Desk is a mode flag, not a second dataset you can cite as "Desk said."
- Do not compute a multiple from a blank PE cell.
- Change percent is the provider's session change, not a story about a headline.
- A dated snapshot page is not a better citation than the drawer you actually read.
Who this is for
- Writers who paste quotes into notes and need a rule for what may be pasted.
- Readers who see an empty PE and want to know if the page is broken.
Who should skip
- Auditors building a price archive. This page is a display rule, not a retention policy.
- Modelers who need adjusted closes and total return. We show the close series the chart host returned, and we do not claim a total-return index.
The minimum citation
A usable citation has four parts: symbol, field, provider, as-of. "NVDA was up" is not a citation. "NVDA change percent, Yahoo chart, as-of the timestamp in the drawer" is a citation. The drawer is the checklist. Last, change, volume, PE, source, and mode are stacked there so you do not hunt through the table for the footnote.
Volume is the latest bar on the history fetch when that bar includes a volume. A dash means the bar did not include it. Do not write "volume was zero." Change percent comes from the quote. If the quote omits it and the history has two closes, the board may fill the percent from those two closes and still name the quote provider. Say that you used the session change on the row, not that you ran a separate study.
What Desk fallback is
The server asks whether the OpenBB lab responds. If it does, quotes prefer that lab. If it does not, the page sets mode to Desk and adds a note that the lab is offline. Desk then tries the public chart host and, for history, can try Stooq. The note is part of the citation. Leaving it out makes a public quote look like a platform feed.
Fallback is not a blend. One history provider is stored for the focus series. The table's source column is per symbol. When you write, use the column, not the word Desk, as the provider. Desk only tells you the lab was not the source.
Whether that public path is enough for the sentence is a different article: public data versus licensed terminal data.
Why PE is blank
Trailing PE is stored only when the quote payload includes it. The Yahoo chart request we use for price history has, on the dates we checked through 2026-10-02, returned price bars without a trailing PE field. The cell is therefore blank for SPY, QQQ, NVDA, and AAPL alike. That includes operating companies and funds. The blank does not mean "unprofitable," and it does not mean "PE is unavailable everywhere on the internet." It means this request did not carry the field, so this board will not invent one.
Open the board focused on NVDA if you want to see the rule on a single name that often has a multiple in other products. If the drawer says there is no trailing PE, you stop. You do not open a second site, copy a multiple, and attribute it to this terminal.
What you may not fill in
| Gap | Do not |
|---|---|
| No quote | Reuse yesterday's last price without a new as-of. |
| No history | Describe a trend you cannot point at on the chart. |
| No PE | Divide a price by an earnings figure you did not fetch on this page. |
| No headline on the symbol | Borrow a market story and say it explains that symbol. |
| Lab offline | Write "OpenBB data" for a Yahoo row. |
How this differs from a daily snapshot
A daily market note can repeat the table for people who want a date-stamped URL. Those notes are a convenience. They are not the place we ask search engines to learn the citation rule, because the prose around the table barely changes. This page is the rule. The morning steps that apply the rule are in the morning routine.
FAQ
Is an empty cell a data outage?
Only if last price is also missing. An empty PE beside a last price means the price arrived and the ratio did not.
Should change percent match the chart's last two closes?
Often, but not by promise. Quote change and history closes can come from the same host and still differ by a revision or by which session the quote calls "prior." Cite the field you used.
Can a later lab session fill PE without a rewrite of this page?
Yes. If a provider starts sending trailing PE, the cell should show the number and the source. This page stays true as long as a missing field stays blank.
